The live action element of Wilfred was filmed over six days in July 1999, and was shot entirely on location in North Yorkshire close to where Wilfred Owen had been based and actually written much of the poetry eighty years earlier.

From the outset, the main task for the art department, lead by Marion Harrison and cinematographer, Alistair Mckenzie, was to decide on the look and practical dimensions for a section of trench that would be used in many scenes of the finished film.
Peter Kershaw wanted something that would be as historically accurate as we could make it and consulted Don Shaw and other members of the Great War Society.
|
|
As we were dealing with 1917-1918, according to Don, the textbook design of a trench was very rarely the reality. Shell damage, enemy occupation and re-occupation meant that trenches were often a hybrid of styles, some merely a series of connecting shell holes.

This knowledge gave Marion and the art department the freedom to play with the design: to make a set that would be both practical and unusual at the same time.
